Cleveland could decide its regular-season starting quarterback as soon as Monday, with Shedeur Sanders appearing to have the edge over Deshaun Watson after Watson struggled Saturday.

The plan was for Watson and Sanders to make one preseason start apiece. Sanders threw an interception in each of his first two appearances, but his Week 2 performance improved from his opening outing. Watson, who outplayed Sanders a week earlier, had poorly placed throws and was booed off the field by Browns fans.

The decision has not been announced. Todd Monken said Watson’s postgame comments toward Cleveland fans will not affect the quarterback competition, but the veteran’s latest performance has left Sanders in position to benefit from the evaluation.
